Bodnant’s Traditional Welsh Caerphilly gains European Protection
Traditional Welsh Caerphilly/Traditional Welsh Caerffili’ has joined the ranks of Champagne, Parma Ham and Melton Mowbray Pork Pies by being awarded protected food name status by the European Commission.
From today (30/1/2018) ‘Traditional Welsh Caerphilly/Traditional Welsh Caerffili’ is protected by the European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, which is one of three special European Protected Food Name (PFN) designations.
The application for PGI status was made to the European Commission by DEFRA on behalf of Traditional Welsh Caerphilly Cheesemakers in Wales led by Carwyn Adams from Caws Cenarth.
Bodnant Dairy located here at the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre is one of the producers covered by the new protected status and provides us with a unique selling point by making the Traditional Welsh Caerphilly at our dairy.
Aled Rowlands, our dairy manager, said: “This is fantastic news and an important development for the production of Welsh Caerphilly and for the customers who buy it. Welsh Caerphilly is just one of the range of award-winning cheeses we make in our dairy and is extremely popular with our customers.”
“This status allows us to label the cheese with the special logo which tells the customer that it is the genuine product – separating it from misleading inferior versions of the cheese in both quality and flavour.”
“Gaining this particular special status is quite rare and in fact Traditional Welsh Caerphilly has become the first Welsh cheese or dairy product to be granted this EU accolade and is only the 15th Welsh Protected Food Name product. The status will help to preserve the quality of this particular cheese and means people can be absolutely certain about what they are buying.”
“Labelling helps to identify the product and shows it is genuinely made in that geographic region. It’s aim is to protect the reputation of the product while promoting the rural community it comes from.”
Special status means producers can legally use the Traditional Welsh Caerphilly name on the product and that each producer has been successfully audited against product specification.
Welsh Caerphilly and the full range of Bodnant Dairy cheese are sold online and can also be sampled and purchased from our farm shop.
